CLASSIC MOVIE REVIEW: Paul Newman 🐈 Elizabeth Taylor in CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF with STEVE HAYES
Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor heat up the screen in this scorching adaptation of Tennessee William’s Pulitzer prize-winning play CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF (’58). Directed by Richard Brooks and co-starring Jack Carson, Judith Anderson, and from the original Broadway cast, Madelyn Sherwood and Burl Ives, Oscar winner that year for” The Big Country.” It's the perfect “dysfunctional family” film to curl up and devour during the long, hot summer, with everything from greed, lust, loathing, nasty accusations, adultery, and more than a hint of homosexuality. Such fun!

MONSTER MOVIE REVIEW: THE DEADLY MANTIS from STEVE HAYES: Tired Old Queen at the Movies
Elizabeth taylor was stunning in this movie she almost didn't look real her beauty takes your breath a way to see her in person must of been something else her and paul newman had most gorgeous eyes i miss them but i can still watch there movies . 6:15
I love your stories, Steve 😊
Bravo! Remarkable review - astute, fun and educational and entertaining! So enjoy your video/reviews. Always makes me smile.
This movie is so much fun. Darn those little no-neck monstas!
LOVE this movie! Used to watch it with my Grandma Helen.
Such a romantic movie with a touching and poignant story, always brings tears to my eyes
Thank you. The TV series was weird and boring. 1. Parents loved it when it was moved to Fridays. They didn't need to bargain to get kids to bed; all of us got zonked within five minutes. 2. Hope Lange is an icon. a. She won two Emmys for Lead Comedy actress. Yawn, thank who's up there, All in the Family, Newhart, and MTM would blow up the drab sitcom formula in less than a year. 3. The most incredible was Charles Nelson Reilley constantly pursued Hope' character. a) He was more like a sick stalker. b) I was more butch before all the boot camps and Becoming a Real Man seminars I attended. 4. The Captain was a Taco Bell version of Rex Harrison. a) He was lucky Ghostbuster technology was 15 years away.
Have you seen Carol Channing imitating Marlene Dietrich? google it.... hysterical!
Great one!
Thanks Steve. I think Paul Newman was at his most beautiful in this movie. I also love Burl Ives, he was great at playing cantankerous roles 😂
Got to see it recently on the big screen. The horror really builds. Victor Buono was fabulous. When Bette got dressed up to go out, I swear I could smell the bucket of perfume she was wearing.
A long time favorite of mine!!!! 🎥👍
I first saw this movie when I was just a kid. I remember thinking that it was obvious that Paul Newman's character was gay. It surprises me that others thought it was muted.
Your the best
Thanks so much!
I saw the actress who played Mrs. Flagg on an episode of Rhoda.Honey moon cruise episode. All saw Elvira in episode of Adam 12 black market baby She played a maid Only a few minutes screen time. Where do old actors go ? I guess it's the retired actors guild not a great acronym .Did you know Peter Lawford originally signed as edwin brings new meaning to mother flagg pimpimping her son ..im sure youll be quite satisfied
I never could stand Peter Lawford , he alsways seemes so sleazy. I'm so glad they went with Victor Buono instead.
Mike Todd died while this was in production. It was a miracle Taylor was able to finish it.
Strong lady. Real pro.
LOVE you both! Always enjoy your videos.
Many thnaks.
Lauren introduced a whole new type of Femme Fatale. Except that the fatality wasn't fatal. It was just cool, calm and collected. I love this lady!
She certainly made an impression.
You remind me of Robert Osborne host of TCM.
That's the highest compliment I could recieve. A I was so honotred to have met him. A wonderful gentleman and a Film Historian par excellance!
You are so entertaining! Please make more videos!
I'll keep making 'em if you keep watching 'em!
A most excellent review! I’m always looking forward to the next one.
Thank you very much!
This cast was great. They don't make movies like this anymore.
Nope. They don't have the glamour.
Hello, Steve! Would you please do one of your wonderful episodes on 1963’s “I could go on singing”? Judy Garland’s last completed film ( but you already know that ). Your fan, Timothy
It's on my "To Do" list.
Steve, you are witty, intelligent and charming. And knowledgeable! Like one of your favorites once sang, “Who could ask for anything more”?!
Awwww, thank you so much!
What's w/ the whistling when you say "Judith Anderson"? I've seen this, but for some reason, it's the version w/ Jessica Lange that sticks with me: "A Chaaaaald Is Comin'!" 😄
Anderson had a slight whitsling "S", that I tend to exaggerate, for comic effect. I liked the Lang and Jones version as well. With marvelous Kim Stanley as " Big Mama".
Don't see Susan Hayward in this. Mitzi was probably the best choice. Hayward was not a musical -comedy star.
Although, she did a short stint as "Mame" in Las Vegas and got great reviews.
If i had to pick one movie of hers to say which is my favorite, and thats hard, I would pick this hands down. ❤ Bette Davis.
So would she. LOL!
Can you review Elizabeth's greatest role in my opinion "Whos Afrad Of Virginia Woolf", her Academy Award winning performance. A great legendary movie!
'It's on my "To Do" list.
Elizabeth Taylor is absolutely gorgeous in this movie
Other worldly.
I first saw this film in a gay bar in West Covina, of all places (they had a gay bar in West Covina!). 1980s. I knew nothing about it. But knew enough about Hollywood to know that gay was not an acceptable subject matter. So there I was, in a nearly empty bar and thinking “This is a gay film”. Then correcting myself “It can’t be! Not then, with these stars. It was. Wow.
See? Never doubt your Gaydar!
I LOVE this review!! so wonderful! You hit the nail on the head about the poetry of Williams missing from this film and from SWEET BIRD. that is the missing element isn't it? STREETCAR on film is so marvelous because Kazan was able to keep that poetry alive there. That is such a great observation. And it solves a mystery of sorts. Those movies all use actors from the original stage productions, and yet, SWEET BIRD, and this film to a degree aren't allowed to fly to the same degree that STREETCAR flies. I do love this film, however. Things in it are great. All the performances are excellent! I love the jazzy score. I love how it looks. Taylor and Newman couldn't look better, and they really do have marvelous chemistry. As does Newman with Burl Ives. Newman makes this film work really. Plus just looking at him is truly staggering. Omg! Omg! Thanks for posting! I've been a fan for years now!
OMG! I TOTALLY agree. I remember seeing this on TV in the '60's as a kid and being mesmerized by how beautiful he was.
This is an amazing movie. There really isn't even a mediocre performance anywhere, even the no-necks are great no-necks. I grew up in the desert and the high mountains. I never quit understood Williams until I wound up on the gulf coast one year. Who knew drama could be so climate-dependent. Nothing brightens my day like a Steve Hayes review. Thank You!
Nothing brightens mine like hearing a compliment like that! Thanks so much!!! Williams took that climate and made it work in every play he wrote. The heat does things to people, brings out their hidden desires and angst. He was a master at depicting both.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Well, you know what they say: "It's not the heat, it's the humidity". Thank you for all the great times and here's to many more. Long may you reign.
My high school acting teacher tried to teach us about range. To illustrate his point he showed us this and then showed us Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf and told us to focus on Elizabeth Taylor’s performances in both. I absolutely loved this lesson.
Perfection!
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ I know right???
Taylor’s voice is like nails on a chalkboard. Beyond horrible. Make pain stop.
I watched this film for the first time as a kid, wondering when the cat would show up. 😂
Yup....I didn't undertsand it, and didn't care as long as Paul was shirtless.
Dark Victory is probably my favorite BD movie. Jezebel, The Old Maid, Now, Voyager and Whatever happened to Baby Jane? are also on my list of favorites. Keep us in stitches with your imitations.
I'll do it as long as you keep watching! Thanks so much!
ANOTHER GREAT REVIEW. I was wondering about the cruise. Is it still on. Are there still tickets available?
I think so.
As great as everyone's acting is in this film, I find Burl Ives' performance the most memorable. He had presence that demanded attention. A fantastic actor and not a bad singer, too. Despite everyone dancing around Brick and Skipper's sexuality, it still was clear there was something there beyond mere friendship - unrequited or not. Rather ironically, this avoidance actually heightened the tension arising from the fact that Brick was clearly latently or otherwise gay. There's a lot of mendacity in the story. People lying to others and themselves. I guess that's the theme, isn't it?
Certainly one of 'em. Thanks for watching!
I just finished watching this movie and to me it's one of Joan Crawford's finest performance she's at her best playing these kind of roles. Very good film and review!😊😊
I think so too! She's perfect!
I was 16 years old when I saw this movie and I was awe of Elizabeth Taylor's performance as Maggie The Cat. Even if the homosexuality was pretty much erased from the movie version the subtext was still there. The chemistry between Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman was absolutely fantastic
I think so too and often wished they'd done another one together.
Four Star Classic 🌟🌟🌟🌟
So glad you like it!
Thank you for another wonderful review, I love your impersonations! I don't know if it's true but I heard that Tab Hunter was the first choice to play Brick, in this interview he also said that he was offered Sweet Bird of Youth and Summer and Smoke, but that he turned them all down and those were the biggest regrets he had!
They're pretty bog regrets. Oh, boy....Happy Summer and thanks for watching! Steve
An absolute classic. Liz had many, many shitty movies after this - except Virginia Woolf - but here she is truly brimming with sexual frustration, and she delivered a Southern drawl like she was never born in the UK!
I think she's spectacular in this one and " Suddenly, Last Summer" the following year.
Intense film and great review Steve!👍👍
Many thanks!
Mildred Dunnock ❤❤❤❤
Lovely lady. Terrific actress. Kazan loved her.
The cast is AMAZING 👏❤
I agree.
Thanks for your reviews. Would love to see you review Reflections in a Golden Eye.
I'll think it over. Thanks for the suggestion. .
Mr. Burl Ives...the wonderful snowman from Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer...SILVER AND GOLD...SILVER AND GOLD!!! 😊♥️✊🏾🙏🏾
Lies and mendacitry! Lies and mendacity! LOL!
One of my favourite Judith Anderson performances 👌 must remember not to use the 'no neck monsters ' around other people's kids
She's always magnetic.
Hi Steve❤
Hello.
